CONTEXT

Hello, this is the sixth Dev Diary of 'Discourse Under Duress', A comic inspired by and occuring in Eipril's universe. It's also inspired by a dream where I came across a memoir of a furry who fought in a war, got nuked, survived, went to college and got laid, that's as far as I was willing to read.

someone read the last diary, thanks. Note that I am obviously not affiliated with Eipril, if you are reading this, comment what you think.

THE ACTUAL DEV DIARY

Back on the grind it seems, I finished the third page and got started on the first, which was fun, the script goes for around 30 panels of differing sizes, a few pages have already been completed in the sense that I can start sketching on digital.

It's really a matter of keeping my head down, I've got 3-ish projects running, "Hunting in Hell" as it is called, "Discourse Under Duress" and the third one I can't remember, I think I've got an overload on creative projects.

I'm starting to doubt the idea of releasing all this at bulk, it feels like I'm not making any progress, but on the plus side I know that if I have all the sketches down, I can basically roll over it with the line-art and the color like as if I was making a normal youtube video, where I sketch everything and then line, color and shade.

When I finish the comic, properly, and all the pages are done, the final dev diary will be called 'Eipril: Discourse Under Duress' or maybe something else.

Here are some ideas for the release of Discourse Under Duress

  1. I release it in Bulk, just onto the portal for everyone to see.
  2. I release it weekly or something like that, so pages don't compete with each other for attention (also so I don't get reprimanded for spamming.)
  3. I simultaneously work on finishing and sketching 2 different pages at the same time, this actually sounds like a good idea actually why am I not doing this.
  4. I directly DM it to eipril and get banned for harassment.

VOTE NOW ON YOUR PHONES, and everyone voted so hard the palace caught on fire.

Should really stop thinking about the end of a project when I'm halfway through it, anyways, I want to dedicate the rest of this dev diary to the comic itself, here's the progress made + any commentaries I have.

iu_933318_7574568.webp

  • Page 3: modified panel lines
  • Panel 4: modified a previous pose, merged them together.
  • Panel 5: This one was a bit hard to do, but I ultimately got it done, still need to make full body references for Liz and Rou.

iu_933319_7574568.webp

  • Panel 1: was pretty easy to complete.
  • Panel 2: ditto.
  • Panel 3: will need to re-do.

Next steps include

  1. complete Panel 3, Page 4.
  2. complete the rest of the page.
  3. ???

Hello, this is the fitfh Dev Diary of 'Discourse Under Duress', A comic inspired by and occuring in Eipril's universe. It's also inspired by a dream where I came across a memoir of a furry who fought in a war, got nuked, survived, went to college and got laid, that's as far as I was willing to read.

No one reads these things but I am obviously not affiliated with Eipril, if you are reading this, comment what you think.

THE ACTUAL DEV DIARY

I hate to admit it but I need to draw stuff on a actual notebook and then digitize it, which is very annoying for if I want to push ahead with drawing.

That was quick, I want to dedicate the rest of this dev diary to the comic itself, here's the progress made + any commentaries I have.

iu_920386_7574568.webp

  • Panel 1: added missing text and related art
  • Panel 2: moved from panel 1
  • Panel 3: I used master of puppets for the graves idea + a mushroom cloud
  • Panel 4: Temporary stand in, I didn't write the comic that far, will script later.
  • Panel 5: I plan to have a Eipril Stand-in FURIOUS at the misadventures of the mercenary trio, fun occurs.

CONTEXT

Hello, this is the fourth Dev Diary of 'Discourse Under Duress', A comic inspired by and occuring in Eipril's universe. It's also inspired by a dream where I came across a memoir of a furry who fought in a war, got nuked, survived, went to college and got laid, that's as far as I was willing to read.

I've seen and done weirder things in my dreams and turned them into Youtube videos, so this is nothing, I also want to declare that I am not affiliated with Eipril, so perhaps take this comic as a tribute to these kind of artists in the only way I know how, by barging in screaming with a gun, knocking a vase over and blowing up a police station.

THE ACTUAL DEV DIARY

Hello! I don't think anyone as properly seen these dev diaries, it's like being a cat ready to pounce on it's prey, it's exciting, it's also very lonely. Like playing on a Minecraft server, you're building a fort on a stone beach whilst everyone else griefs and trades and talks with each other, and you just stand there on the rocks as you watch the game chat go by, no one acknowledging your existence...

Anyways, crippling desire for companionship and camaraderie aside, I made some more progress on the pages, and a few script rewrites here and there.

PANEL BY PANEL

Anyways, now that's out of the way, I want to dedicate the rest of this dev diary to the comic itself, here's the progress made + any commentaries I have, the third page got started, but I have a choice that needs to be made, a or b?

CONTEXT

Hello, this is the third Dev Diary of 'Discourse Under Duress', A comic inspired by and occuring in Eipril's universe.

It's been a hot minute, in between a rough(er than expected) first week back at high school, balancing multiple projects and the release of "Running the Red-light" alongside a lull in motivation, progress was slow on the pages, but I pushed through and got some more panels and such done, alongside that, I've began highlighting the speech bubbles and putting the text in first and then doing the sketches instead of the other way around, though I've had the most success doing them at the same time and modifying it until I'm satisfied with the end result.

I'm also probably going to try and make references for Elizabeth, Rou, Viktor and Tankman, who is not the same Tankman as the captain or his buddy, he's a personal one, it's a long story, long enough that I made a video about it (which is also based off a dream).

I also don't know what to do about the final panel, it's a long text wall meant to inform Liz and Rou about their world, but I really don't want to bore the reader with a text wall, that is bad comic making. Instead I will have one paragraph and an accompanying image, e.g a war, or a bunch of banner flying in the wind or the face a soldier or something like that, just to keep the reader entertained, I don't want for it to go for too many panels however, maybe 3-4 maximum, don't know how to end it, there are multiple ways for me to end the comic:

  1. A police negotiator disturbs their conversation and a gun fight is about to begin, the comic ends there, with maybe an epilogue of some kind of the 3 mercenaries running and gunning to their escape.
  2. Yuri breaks the fact that Liz and Rou are watched in their most intimate moments, and are puppets on strings or something like that, I particularly don't want to go this route because I think it gets too meta, and feels like a cop-out.
  3. The drill finishes, and Viktor and Tankman come over to Yuri's side of the room and they debate whether or not to kill the couple, Yuri makes the point that they're both protected by patrĂ³ns, and can't be killed, saying that the longer they stay in their world the more unwelcoming it becomes, the three mercenaries leave but before they do Yuri gives one final speech, with the fact that the couple is being watched used as a punch line, before he gets up and leaves, but not before spotting a special token inside the locker that was drilled. (think of those Papers Please tokens).
  4. A "Dowozer" bursts through the wall payday style and a lot of expletives and gunshots are exchanged between the mercenaries and the Dowozer, this ending leans into the heist aspect of this.

I personally lean to ending 3, endings 2 and 1 are both earlier drafts, and ending 3 was considered since the first 2 were terrible in my eyes, and didn't leave much to the imagination, ending 3 however gives stuff to think about, and still uses elements of ending 2 for a chuckle or a laugh.

PANEL BY PANEL

Anyways, now that's out of the way, I want to dedicate the rest of this dev diary to the comic itself, here's the progress made + any commentaries I have, the second page got done so that's nice, I'll hold off on making any finished pages, and instead focus on making sure I have the comic all finished in the sketch phase, and share on the forums, hopefully I don't get sued.

iu_887138_7574568.webp

  • All Panels, Page 1: Pink text bubbles to make boundaries more clear.

iu_887139_7574568.webp

  • All Panels, Page 2: Pink text bubbles make boundaries more clear. The text is a lot different than in the original intended script, if you see closely Yuri was supposed to manifest a magical sword, but I decided against it, instead trying to move the plot along, forgot to do the pink lines in panel 5, but Elizabeth is asking the question here.
  • Panel 1: The sketch and text are done.
  • Panel 2: Ditto.
  • Panel 3: Quite the nightmare to do, the original sketchbook photo was at an angle and wasn't as clear on the first, so it took some effort to get things right, and then I had to draw characters sitting down (a weakness of mine) so I had to work on that as well, but it paid off.
  • Panel 4: Yuri was originally a lot closer to the edge of the paper, but I pushed him to the right to make his pose more clearer, and accidentally gave more space for Tankman to pop his head over and see what was going on.
  • Panel 5: Much like panel 4, this was also a mini-nightmare to do, characters sitting down + side view + Elizabeth's height is an uncertainty, yet again due to a lack of references, will go searching soon(?), the background also caused problems but not too much, gonna see what should go in the posters, a volleyball club advertisement perhaps?
  • Panel 6: I intend to have an image of a bunch of banners flying in the sky, with a bunch of monolith eyes looking, maybe even doors or some latin or something, the logo of the Imperium, a Paw, a 4 leave clover, and a bunch of other factions I'm gonna put in, this segment was always intended, but at the time I didn't know how to implement it without breaking the flow of the story.

Next steps include:

  1. drawing panel 6, fix the pink lines.
  2. take a photo of page 3, and start page 3 with the storybook panels.
  3. Rearrange the panels via editing and make the skeleton of page 3.
  4. sketch page 3, put in the text.
  5. if the panels overflow, start page 4.
  6. once all the panels from the sketchbook are done, make page 4/5 and bring it to an end.
  7. attempt ending 3.
  8. post sketch to newgrounds forum.
  9. receive a cease and desist.

CONTEXT

Hello, this is the second Dev Diary of 'Discourse Under Duress', A comic inspired by and occuring in Eipril's universe.

I've made some progress on the comic, it may be small but it's surprisingly calming when a comic comes together, some problems are figuring out the clothing both the hostages are supposed to be wearing, I just assume a shirt and cheerleader uniforms or something, but I'll have to go through more references, which is something that takes a bit of mental preparation.

I don't actually know the names of the 2 characters, so I'll refer to them as hostages for the foreseeable future.

I also don't exactly know their personalities, I know that they're in college, and that's just about it, really wish animation didn't take that long, or the artist made some sort of introduction comic for all of them.

there actually isn't too much to say here, just problems with characterization and the satisfaction of seeing a plan come together.

PANEL BY PANEL

Anyways, now that's out of the way, I want to dedicate the rest of this dev diary to the comic itself, here's the progress made + any commentaries I have, hopefully I don't get sued by whatever legal team Eipril's got behind her back, bigger fish to fire right?

iu_858028_7574568.webp

  • Panel 4: finished the faces and added dialogue, facial expressions will get better hopefully.
  • Panel 5: I like using fake outs in my text whenever my character talks, not because he's noble, it's because he can't get a girlfriend.

Next steps include finishing the clothing of the hostages and then moving onto the second page's sketches, so I'll:

  1. Sketch everything
  2. Lineart everything
  3. Color everything
  4. Shade everything

And then upload them in a stack, or maybe in a pair (hey, much like our hostages) so readers (if any) don't have to wait for another one to get out.

All of this is me experimenting and finding a system that works for me anyways, so I'll try to not sweat it too much unless legal trouble comes.

CONTEXT

Hello, this is the first Dev Diary of 'Discourse Under Duress', A comic inspired by and occuring in Eipril's universe. It's also inspired by a dream where I came across a memoir of a furry who fought in a war, got nuked, survived, went to college and got laid, that's as far as I was willing to read.

I've seen and done weirder things in my dreams and turned them into Youtube videos, so this is nothing, I also want to declare that I am not affiliated with Eipril, so perhaps take this comic as a tribute to these kind of artists in the only way I know how.

THE ACTUAL DEV DIARY

I've learned a few things from trying to make this comic, this was the first time I used a script in google docs, and I learned to swallow my objections and truly getting knee-deep into the depths for my references... to also introducing and designing a new character based off the some new lore I established.

One of the things I've experimented with is page sizes, previously my standard was 1725 x 1300, which was far too small for me to actually fit anything onto the page leading me to use 4032 x 2410, why use is it? because I originally drew the comic on paper as a rough approximation on where things would be, which ended up being to big for the 1725 x 1300 size.

I can say for certain that I prefer the 4032 page size, being used to drawing in 1920 x 1080 for Youtube videos.

PANEL BY PANEL

Anyways, now that's out of the way, I want to dedicate the rest of this dev diary to the comic itself, here's the progress made + any commentaries I have, I actually have a LOT to say about character designs, but I want to dedicate a proper dev diary to it, hopefully I don't forget all the commentary about by then. That or I just make another dev diary.

iu_843318_7574568.webp

  • Panel 1: Payday-esque drill (complete with third world construction) and a Tankmen, who is from a previous video of mine, which is also a mercenary mission alongside Viktor, the new character.
  • Panel 2: nothing special.
  • Panel 3: the background behind Yuri is supposed to be faded or a single color, it's a bit hard to explain.
  • Panel 4: drawing tied up characters is not my forte.

I also want address why Eipril's characters look so weird, well for one thing, I don't usually draw noses or proper eyes or ears or mouths for my characters, this is changed with anthropomorphic animals, and animals in general, whereby sometimes I might add more details, you can also see this with tankman, as you cannot see his eyes, and such I use his mouth for a facial expression.

iu_843319_7574568.webp

Also there are barely any references I can use for the pair, so I had to make references of my own, this image is old, because it's on my desktop computer and I'm in a foreign country right now, the actual file has a proper look, complete with color, line art and shading.

I'm pretty convinced that Eipril has a ref sheet I can look at on her patreon but it's probably locked behind benefits.

Ending lines here
